Pittsburgh: One of America's Best Kept Secrets

Most people would not put Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on their list of favorite cities. In fact, in the past, Pittsburgh was deemed one of the ugliest and most unhealthy cities in which to live. However, over the years, this bustling metropolis which sits at the intersection of three major rivers, has redeemed itself out of necessity. The industries which made it dirty and unhealthy are no longer in business, and it has become a sleek downtown of glass and steel structures. I love Pittsburgh because it is a large city with a small town feel. Despite its greatness, it is filled with ethnic neighborhoods and eateries which reflect its history of a “melting pot” for the immigrants who settled here years ago. It is a city of hills and valleys, which is also a nemesis during bad storms. Any one of the rivers can flood, causing major damage. Pittsburgh is also home to great institutions of higher learning, first-rate medical centers and gorgeous parks and vistas. One of my favorite places to go is Station Square, which sits on the Monongahela River. From there, you can take an inclined plane ride up to Mount Washington, which has breathtaking views of Pittsburgh’s golden triangle. There are restaurants situated along the crest of the hill, where you can drink or dine while watching the sun set in the distance. And of course, Pittsburgh has the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. Need I say more? I have a love affair with Pittsburgh, and for good reason. It’s one of America’s best kept secrets.
